The project

The fire station was facing a progressive sagging of its basement structure. A structural reinforcement intervention was necessary to prevent any further deterioration of the building.

The City of Montreal was looking for a durable solution to support the existing structure without interrupting the station’s operations.

Additional Challenges

Access to the basement was through an adjacent daycare center. Our movements and schedules had to be carefully planned to ensure total discretion and the safety of the children.

Each pillar had to be manufactured in our workshop with millimeter precision, as no corrections or welding could be performed on-site.

Structural Pillar Project Results

PacoMetal first produced complete shop drawings of the steel pillars, designed to the nearest millimeter. Every measurement had to be exact, as no welding was permitted on-site.

The pillars were entirely manufactured in the workshop, then delivered and installed directly in the station’s basement. The installation had to be precise, fast, and flawless, as the building remained in operation throughout the duration of the work.

All beams and metal structures were positioned and secured without on-site modification, demonstrating the accuracy of the initial design.

Finally, the pillars were painted in safety yellow to ensure maximum visibility in the technical space, thereby reinforcing compliance with building standards and site safety.

A mandate executed with no room for error, in an active institutional environment where precision was non-negotiable.

MIG Welding

MIG welding was preferred due to the indoor location of the pillars. This process allowed us to assemble the structures with precision and robustness.

Shop drawing

The creation of a millimeter-accurate shop drawing ensured precise workshop fabrication and error-free on-site installation.
