The protective bollard project

The Old Port of Montreal was looking for a robust protection solution to secure certain high-traffic outdoor pedestrian areas.

The design had to be refined, given its highly architectural location near the Clock Tower Quay.

The mandate required a structure capable of absorbing impacts, withstanding Quebec’s weather conditions, and meeting a strict institutional framework.

A major technical constraint for the security bollards was integrating an engineer’s plan for installation, including a concrete block anchored into the ground to ensure maximum stability and full compliance with applicable standards.

Outcome of the security bollard project

The 316L steel bollards feature a galvanized finish, ensuring optimal protection against corrosion and the elements.

Thanks to precision TIG welding, laser cutting, and rigorous coordination of certifications, the installation was completed efficiently in three days.

The client now benefits from:

  • Durable outdoor protection

  • A structure compliant with institutional (government) standards

  • A solid installation anchored in concrete

  • A fully managed project, from design to installation

Services performed

Shop drawing

Design of a 3D plan for the security bollards to turn the client’s idea into a concrete technical solution.

TIG welding

TIG welding was used due to the outdoor environment and the strength and finish requirements.

Laser cutting

Certain bollard components required precision laser cutting to ensure an exact fit for a specific part of the bollard.

Engineer certification

The steel bollard project had to be validated by an engineer to meet several technical and regulatory constraints, including anchoring into a concrete block and applicable institutional standards.

Galvanization certification

Certification confirming that the galvanization treatment enables durable outdoor use, with protection against corrosion and the elements.

Q&A on protective bollards

A bollard is a demarcation element between a pedestrian area and a roadway. It is a cylindrical mass installed to protect the pedestrian section and separate roadways in high-traffic areas.

Its main role is to reduce the risk of accidents in high-traffic areas by creating a robust physical barrier between vehicles and pedestrians. It is also referred to as a security bollard, designed to act as an impact-resistant bollard in high-traffic urban environments.

A bollard is particularly useful for road traffic, parking, and pedestrian areas, especially in front of public buildings, businesses, and institutions, where a stainless-steel bollard provides both protection and durability.

316L stainless steel offers exceptional corrosion resistance. Its surface will not tarnish, even in outdoor environments exposed to weather, salt, and humidity.

It resists wear, making it perfectly suited for outdoor installations. It is also the medical-grade steel, recognized for never corroding.

The “L” stands for Low Carbon. This low carbon content allows welds to hold up better by reducing the risk of corrosion at welded joints.

316L steel is therefore an excellent choice for any security bollard project intended for commercial or municipal applications.
